Feeding assistance involves helping clients consume their meals. However, it’s much more than that. It involves personalized meal preparation for the person’s dietary needs and preferences, encouragement to engage in meals, and ensuring a safe eating environment to prevent choking or aspiration. Nutritional health is crucial for recovery, maintaining strength, and preventing malnutrition or dehydration.
We start by preparing nutritious, appealing meals that meet dietary needs. Our clients who have difficulty holding utensils or bringing food to their mouths get help from caregivers who cut food into manageable pieces, spoon-feed, and allow adequate time for the person to chew and swallow safely. Caregivers providing feeding assistance also monitor food and liquid intake to confirm that clients get enough nutrition and hydration. Whenever possible, we encourage independence by supporting the individual’s ability to eat independently.
